Then we went to the local sex museum. It's really just a museum dedicated to sex art. Sculptures, pictures, videos, and other? It's almost so shocking it can't be discussed. The best I can come up with is "only in Japan".

Natural Hot Springs. These are too hot to swim in. They are called "Jigoku" like "Hell's Water" or something.

Oh Monkey Mountain. So I hear they tricked all the monkeys onto this mountain to keep them from eating the crops. It's a gorgeous mountain. You can go there and just hang out with them.

It's really not possible to keep a truck that clean unless you clean it three times a day.

So this is an entry showing the new apartment I'm living in. I'm happy with it. Compared with the standards in Korea this is quite a good place. It has a big fridge with a freezer, air conditioning, a combo washer/dryer, multi-nozzle shower, dual gas stove, floor heating, and a doorbell with a camera in it so I can see who's outside. Anyways here's some pics.

Alright, so I haven't updated in like two months for good reason. I've been more or less sick for about a month and half. I'm not sick sick, like I have some virus, or anything. But I do have a syndrome, which means I'm sick for no reason. I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome. I'll spare you the details, but something, either stress, depression, diet change, or general homesickness, is upsetting the workings of my bowels, and I need to take medicine to be alright. The doctors say its not serious and that I'll get better, but its hard to believe when you need medicine just to go to work.

In other news, me and Charlotte are doing good and I've even met her mom twice. I'm also going to Japan in 10 days, so I need to show all these pictures now, so I can talk about Japan later.

So we went on a field trip to an arboretum. which was pretty fun. Ok, it was a lot of fun. But it was more like a photoshoot than a tree-learning experience because of they hired a photographer for the day. Anyways here are some cool pics, that i have some stupid comments on.

These are some of my ideas about learning in kids.

Ideas About Learning.

So I’ve been a teacher for five months now and obviously I’ve made a lot of observations about how kids learn. I even have a wide spectrum of these observations, because I teach all the way from age 5 to age 12. In reaffirmation of Freudian observations, it is true that children display different behavior at different stages in thinking. Children, ages 5 to 6, are very open to almost any idea. I can read these children any book, play them any type of music, and they will enjoy it. In line with Freud again, these children have not yet entered the latency stage and are quasi-sexual. They “play date” other kids in the class. They like to hold hands and be picked up. The words “love” don’t invoke disgust.

In an almost complete rejection of this behavior, children, ages 7 to 11 are anti-sexual, anti-physical contact, anti-adult. Also their taste and preferences become enrooted in them. They only like certain types of music, certain TV shows, and certain foods. As a result, I find what I can teach children in these age groups fairly limited in comparison to kindergarten. The one exception would be games, which children in these age groups love, because they can finally think complexly enough to be able to grasp all the nuances of playing a game. In other words, they can think in stages and think about multiple stages at once.

Once you enter the early-teen age group, age 12 or so, they’re behavior again changes. They are calmer. They sit in their seats. But they are also less inquisitive. They only wait for the time when class is over and they can go back to doing whatever they were doing before.

Now this has been a brief summary of what each age group is like, but what I really want to discuss is individual learning. Before becoming a teacher, I was wholly sympathetic to the idea that success in school and learning was influenced largely by one’s natural intelligence. However, over the past five months, it has become clear to me that an individual’s personality is almost, if not more important then their natural intelligence. Some children are just lazy, while others are active. Some are quiet and reserved, while others are loud and boisterous. Some are mean, while others are nice. And I do pair these words in a scientific way. I believe that lazy is the counter personality to active. And each children seems to be a mix of lazy vs. active; reserved vs. loud, mean vs. nice, as well as intelligent vs. dumb. In children, especially 5 and 6 year olds, these personality traits are far too easy to spot. One child, her name is Kelly, perfectly displays the mean trait. Because her plant wasn’t growing as fast as the other children’s plants she started ripping the other kid’s plants out. She’ll also steal other kid’s chairs and pencil crayons. You might say this is child-like behavior but I totally disagree. Only a few kids would even think of these sorts of things. Most are actually nice. However, not all of Kelly’s traits are bad. She has high natural intelligence, she’s reserved, not loud, and she’s active (she has endurance to do all of her homework). Given her personality, it’s very likely she will continue to be successful at school. She has the brains, the will, and the concentration to learn. However, that mean streak will pose a problem for her in the future. It’s not unlikely that it would lead her to punishable behavior or become a politician.

But in some cases, personality traits severely limit a child’s ability to learn. Children that are smart, but lazy, won’t bother exercising their brain and learning the material. I’ve seen these kids develop into smart kids, stuck in slow classes, learning the same thing they did last year. Their heads are full of knowledge, but all the wrong types of knowledge. One particular student of mine, Kyle, is very smart and memorized the entire book we are reading. But because he was too lazy to do the homework, listen in class, or try to learn to read, he can’t read a single page of the book. He has lots of knowledge and can readily display wisdom about Japanese anime, and Korean cards games, but has very little useful knowledge. In his case, his natural intelligence, serves him very little, and his personality is far more influential on the direction of his life.

A final example of how effective personality is, is a student of mine, named Charnie. Charnie is not terribly intelligent, but she none the less scores just as high as the smartest kids in the school on tests, because she’s naturally reserved, quiet, and attentive. She must listen to every word I say. She also does everything I say with no argument. She has to work harder than the smarter kids, but she achieves the same result, so really there is no difference.
I think back to my own childhood now and how many kids fit these different molds and how they turned out. There were a few Charnie’s. They usually got overlooked, but probably obtained success. I sure know more than a few Kyle’s, smart people that wasted away their intelligence. Never went to university and are now working somewhere they hate. I probably don’t fit any of the three models I’ve given. Sometimes I was Charnie, but I was also loud at times. Even though my behavior got pretty bad in High school, the truth was I was a pretty good student as a kid.
Not to make this too long, but you’ll notice that I put the burden of learning entirely on the student. Some might counter that a good teacher can make bad or dumb kids learn. I’m not advocated that position at all. In fact, I really believe the recipe for success happens in the womb. It’s pretty much pre-determine before a kid enters school, how well they will do. Their natural personality and intelligence, as I’ve argued here are the true determining factors. I’ve done all sorts of amazing teacher things to open kid’s minds, but the truth of the matter is that good teaching only has effect on good students. If the child isn’t receptive to your message, s/he is not going to hear it. Teaching at a private school, I have so many kids in my classes that are literally a waste of their parent’s money. They simply don’t have the ambition or personality to benefit from my teaching. To these kids, I’m a babysitter, and an expensive one at that. I’d much rather divert my efforts to child with the potential to learn, but that’s only a dream.

Anyways, these were just some of my thoughts that I wanted to write about and hopefully, some of you will find them interesting.

So the past month or so pretty much sucked. That's why I didn't post anything. When the dust came I got really sick for like a good three weeks and I also found out that I was reacting to the MSG in all the food, so now I'm on MSG alert. Only in Korea. To make matters worse, I got singled. On my birthday, no less. Boo to Korean spring. Boo to cherry blossom season. Yay for the happy kids. Ok here's the pics and stuff

First let me say, that Roger Federer makes me sick. Sure he's an extremely nice guy with great hair a great tennis player, but he's now set to win 45 games in a row and set a new record and quite frankly I hope he dies. I'm sick of always watching tennis and there's federer ruining the whole game by simply crushing his opponent. IT"s no fun when you already know who's going to win and they keep winning. BORING! Federer, drop dead~!

It's been another interesting month in this crazy country. The Christians have been hounding me hard trying to convert me, which as I said to Siewling, is like some sort of ironic historical revenge. That I'm being hounded into conversion because my ancestor came here and hounded them into conversion. And there always shocked when I explain there is no God. like jesus christ Koreans, it's my god damn people's religion, and frankly we're bored of it. Maybe i'll convert to buddism and then hound them and see how they like it.

I've also found a model store, so I"m being a little boy and building models again. I have a brand new bike, which further makes me a little boy. oh and I saw a good movie "music and lyrics" and I covered it on my youtube.

Um it's been a good month. working, spending time with my girlfriend. highlights were sledding with school, skiing with Ji Hey and steak at Outback. I'm still having visions.

Then there was skiing. Skiing is so much easier than snowboarding. I learned how to ski pretty quickly and it was all fun after that.

I saw two crazy koreans on the way home. one assulted and yelled at some americans and another bothered and followed us both. I told the guy to fuck off and pushed him away and the americans thought I was some sort of hero. not really. I actually really wanted to yell at someone for all their rudeness for a while.

TRIP TO GYEONGJU, the old Silla kingdom capital

So I had a week off for the Winter vacation, so I decided to take a trip down the old city of Gyeongju, which I heard was really nice. It was an enjoyable trip. I rode the KTX bullet train, which was very fast and I got to see the rest of korea, which is pretty much just like everywhere else in korea. when i got to Silla it was easy to see why it became a capital. it's a large flat plain surrounded by mountains and is easily defendable. my favorite site was Bulguksa. it felt like being back in the 7th century. I also met some wonderful Korean girls and we travelled around together seeing the sites, which was good for me, because I didn't get lost. Too bad they were from Busan though.

Huge Korea update

So my last entry I kind of was a little hard on Korea, for its lawlessness and its' unhealthy lifestyles, so this time I decided to focus on the positive of Korea. First of all, its very nice to be a teacher here, because if a kid likes you they tell their parents and then their parents buy you presents. This is my first present I got from Sally's mother, the one I made a snowman for last Sunday.

Kudos to this clever invention. Koreans live in apartments right. Now try moving into an apartment all the time. Well how about a build big truck crane that carries stuff right up to your porch 30 stories in the air. Is it dangerous, fuck yeah, does it save time and hassle, you better believe it.

Again genius Korean grammar. So many things in English are spelt wrong here. tsk tsk.

Korea - The faux west

Upon first arriving in South Korea, I was bedazzled and impressed at how they sampled so many
different cultures and made it their own. Now I beginning to completely question that assumtion. You see Korea is sort of this parrellel dimension where all those things which are familiar to you are actually not what's familiar to you at all and really something quite different. For example, they have Coke, it's in all the stores, but their Coke is not our Coke. It looks like Coke, smells like it, but it sure doesn't taste like it. They also have Burger King, but again it looks like Burger King, has all the same menu options, but the chicken just isn't quite chicken, the mayo, not quite mayo and french fries, not quite potato. And this applies to almost everything Korea has that is suppose to be from another country and foreign, but let me tell you, Kellog's frosted flakes is not Frosted Flakes here, yogurt isn't even reconizable, and turkey is some sort of chicken - mutated
thing. They also have "Western Restaurants" which serve stuff completly new to me (since when
is Western food served with Kimchi and pickled radish). And its not just Western stuff, so-called "chinese food and japanese food" restaurants serve stuff that can only be called "lets put korean food in japanese and chinese dishware". Food is the obvious example in all of this, but it doesn't end there. Taxi drivers like to play the "western" radio station, which includes every song I've never heard before. And its honestly like the most obscure crappy elevator music ever written. No wonder koreans write the same crap, they must think this is what we really listen to. This insanity even extends to religion, where their interpretation is a little different then the one we're use to. Further proof that the bible actually doesn't make any sense at all.

My so-called western food, yeah I know

I shit you not this reads "Kimchi refridgerator", like a mother fucker is such a sad Korean
he needs a whole refridgerator just for Kimchi.

The other day I tried to escape this faux-western actually korean mind game and ventured to the
infamous Itaewon special foreingers zone, a place supposingly that caters to US army soldiers
and a haven of western culture. Well I was severly dissapointed to find that it wasn't the western Chinatown I had been expecting, but rather some sort of gangster's paradise, where US soldiers, pimped out in Fubu, walk around with scandulous korean girls, where the streets are lined with milllions of different kinds of thug gear. So needless to say I was going to find a potato or kraft dinner in what was really an excuse to sell black market merchandise to bored soldiers.

A note of laws in this country. I don't think there are any. People consistently run red-lights, park on corners, drive on sidewalks, sell illegal shit and even hound you on the Subway. I really don't think there are any police here or hospitals. Here are some people who even sang and played the flute as part of their show to get you to give them money for something.

On the brighter side of things, I've begun to recover my voice, although I still have a cough. After escaping Itaewon I did some walking around the back streets of Seoul, a gigantic confusing mess of houses (no wonder they don't have street addresses, they hardly have streets). Today was great.

It's not foggy in Korea by the way, that's smog.

Sunday is quickly becoming my favorite day of the week. In the afternoon, kids hang out in front of the church and they always stop and talk to me. Today because there was snow, we played a good long time, throwing snowballs and making snowmen. well, actually they didn't have a clue how to do either, so I showed them how to make both and then I was Mr.popular. Kids are definately the brightest star of this rocky hole called Korea. My time working with them and playing with them on the weekend is the funnest part of my life here and worth everything else. Soon I will kidnap some and take them back to Canada........

I taught these girls how to make a snowball and they bought me a Korean coke. Damn kids are
thoughtful here.

Alright so its coming up on two weeks in Korea and I can barely talk at this point. This air quality is pretty bad here in Korea. I feel like I have the black lung, coughing all the time. I can't sing either, so I'm getting no where on my music. The air wouldn't be so bad here if they just put some regulations on car manufactures like in American, but there's no laws here and so many people drive diesel cars with no filter, very smart. Not to mention they're chronic smokers. It's one of those developing countries ironic enigmas that people are so obessed with their well-being on their kids think nothing about lighting up right in front of them. It makes me cry to see Internet cafes full of little kids coughing to death from second-hand smoke. The sad thing is that if they just cleaned up their air a little things would be pretty great around here. Korea is a nice place under that blanket of smoke and smog.

Supposingly I'm getting a few days off this Christmas, so I've decided to take a trip down to the historic city of Gyeongju, where there's apparently a shit load of temples and tombs, my kind of town. And the whole trip is only going to cost me $200, pretty sweet eh? Alright now for some pictures.

New life in Korea part 2

Okay okay, so now I'm here in Korea and it's pretty good. The climate is destroying me and now I'm sick and the food is kind of shitty, but I love my job and did I mention....I'm freaking rich!
The above picture is of one of my new classes. Peach class. Their a bunch of trouble makers. THe guy in the picture is the guy I'm replacing, which was a wierd experience, because I literally took over his life. His classes, his apartment, his cellphone, his desk, his stamps, his props, his Cds, even his freaking alarm clock. He was canadian as well. Now i'm the canadian.

Okay now some thoughtful thoughts on South Korea. The first thing that gets imparted on
you as soon as you enter Korea is that everything looks like it just built yesterday and indeed
tons of construction is still ongoing. The houses, the roads, the stores, are all brand new, well at least in the area of the city I'm living in. By the way, Uijeongbu ain't no suburb this place is packed. It probably covers an area the size of Hamilton, but there's 3 million plus people in this (town). Overall I'm quite impressed with South Korea. Particularly in areas of urban design. Despite so many people living in a small space, they've been able to achieve standards of
living equal to our own and they've done it through overreaching conservation and indifference
to uniformity. Apartments are wonderously efficient. Floor heating works wonders. It's nice to
walk around barefoot and always have your feet warm. Also all places have break rooms, like closed in balconies, that buffer the cold from the outside and save heat. These rooms house storage and the laundry machine. There's no dryer, becuase its a waste of electricty. Space is a precious commodity here and the bathrooms have no baths, only showers, that are one with the bathroom. Frankly, I'm not too thrilled with this thing. Everything is the bathroom is always wet, you have to the keep the toilet paper in the cupboard, but its the willingness to make small sacrafices that have bring affluence to this otherwise barren shithole. Most of Korea is just rocky moutains and the valleys are filled with sandy, rocky shit soil, good for growing next to nothing, except cabbage (which they eat with everything). There's no animals
of any kind. No squirrels, no birds, no racoons, no bugs, nothing...just koreans, many many many koreans. This land is an unforgiving land. Nature gives nothing but icy cold temperatures in the winter. And despite it being -10 C all the time, koreans walk around without hats or gloves, and most women wear skirts. Let me tell you Koreans are tough bastards. These people must be made of nails to live in a place like this and the despite stores full of kids, you won't find one whining or crying. They me getting rich, but they definately aren't spoiled. They're clever too. They build golf ranges over parking lots with nets saving space. They narrow the car allowance, allowing more lanes to be built. They separate residential areas from comercial ones, so neighbourhoods have neighboorhood feels and all shops are located covienently in one spot. They're also very nice and considerate. They try hard not to stare at foreigners (the kids don't know any better and do all the time). And even though they won't talk to you, if you talk to them, they'll really open up and offer you assistence. One old man walked with me 6 blocks to help me find the Subway station. A couple other guys actually gave me their number. They are also great family people. Kids are really a big focus here, unlike north america. So many stores sell stuff for children and almost everyone here is married with kids. And even though they have little concern for safetly otherwise, school zones are vehemently protective. Everywhere is stroller friendly and most places, even small ones, have playgrounds. There's even a big park, just for kids, called Children's Park. There are the good things of Korea though.
There are also some bad things. This place isn't perfect. It is a developing country afterall and that term has a very real meaning to me now as I can see it very clearly. Bascially a developing country is one wear one part of the city can look just like the best neigborhoods in Canada, and then the very next can look like some god awful shithole of place, choatic, old, dirty, with houses looking like scrap books as new innovations like heating are bolted into its ancient frames. Back to what I was saying. Some bad things about here are the non-existent smoking laws and the persistence of so many koreans to smoke all the time, they're love of alcohol (although drugs are non-existent), they're achingly painful lack of individualism
(everyone here dresses almost exactly the same and you won't find any characters like you will on
a toronto subway, even the god damn homeless people are reserved), and finally the overwhelming precence the church. There must be a church every five feet. I can see 7 from work alone. And they have alot of political power and keep out all the "bad" stuff from the West, which is usually the good stuff as we know. But on the whole Korea is a really great place and I dont' think I"m going to have trouble living here at all. I'm going to be rich bitches!! Stuff here is cheaper than Canada and I'm making more than what most Koreans make, so I'm going to have lots of coinage. Now to find a single Korean girl (not easy) and get married. MY NEW LIFE IN KOREA part 1

Okay so I finally have time to tell you about my korean trip. this first part is the trip and the second is my first week here. click the "read more" link to see it.

BUt fuck me the plane broke and my flight was cancelled, so I spent a night in teh hotel.

On the flight over I became violently ill and the paramedics had to assist me when I landed. I was done that day, so I spent a night in San Fran and left the next morning.

California was pretty cool. THe atmosphere in San Fransisco is unique, but the subway was noisy and gross inequality is everywhere, oh by the way Paul Newman has his own brand of raisins for some reason.

So my first entry concerns the odd news about our long lost family car. A little more than a year ago, some Brits approached my dad and asked to rent the old family station wagon/tank/boat with wheels. So they took our car and never came back and my dad was all pissed cause he didn't get his car back. Then they show up this week with a DVD depicted how they took our car coast to coast on a gigantic roadtrip and made a movie out of it. Wonderful. But the car broke down and they left it B.C. Wierd Eh?

Alright so here's a brief sketch of stuff that's gone on for about the last 4 weeks. To begin with i live in chinatown. Home of chinese people.

This is Jamie matechuk, the mother fucker i live with getting fresh in front of some church.

And this is Odie (the mother fucking man) and his girlfriend at some BBQ he threw, which was really good, even though dumbass krumins dropped a chair off the second floor and took out the table with food on it. But it was okay because i got two lemon maragne pies for $3 each.

Then me and Jamie decided to get cultured so we went to the museum.

Then i got hungry and ate some strawberry jammed toast.

Then i had supper in some part of north york with Maggie. they gave us way too much food.

THEN DISASTER STRUCK!! i friggin woke up to find the artificial forest at the bottom of my condo, caught on fire. wtf mate!!!

And then low and behold i saw my god damn bike that i gave away last year locked to some post in Korea town. it was wierd

A day by the shore

God today is beautiful. One of those days that makes 10 months of winter worth it, a day when the world itself is not as wretched and terrible. I walked down to the shore. I love the smell. The smell of the lake blowing in my face is orgasmic. The perfect mix of tangy sand, aroma of vegetation, and the scent of wildlife are incomparable. It is truly beautiful, enough for one to become lost in its aurora. There is also the strange sense of space when one stands on the shore. It is as if standing at the edge of the world. Beyond here is nothing, a vast pool of man-hidden hinterland, the point of no return. To be presented with boundaries, while so use to living in a city that is seemingly never-ending is feeling both of relief and finality. People like boxes, limitation, it gives them the sense that somehow all can be conceived of and mankind is not so insignificant in the universe. For me I love it. Here is a picture of the very edge of the universe of Toronto. Beyond this edge of concrete is barren lake as far as the eye can see. An amazing sight in the middle of city so hopelessly infested with people.

All along this shoreline are quays and condos, some magnificent and gorgeous.

My new life in Ottawa?

Yeah so the one scenerio i dreaded has come true. I applied to carleton on a whim and only because it had the very program i wanted, but i truly wished to go to uoft or ubc, which didn't happen, because my very helpful professor forgot to send his damn letter of reference. But that's over now and i only have my lazy self to blame who should of gotten five letters. anyways, so yeah looks like i'm going to ottawa this september and live in the ice kingdom for a few years, where i only know one person. hi yvonne!!. cause my sister moved back to toronto. not looking forward to leaving my friends, clearly, but i can't exactly turn down going and doing a much needed internship with government, which will just like totally set me up career wise. still haven't decided where to live. in fact i don't even know where the hell carleton is. is it downtown? in the country? will i have to live in an institutional cell again? how big is carleton anyways? this is of critical importance as my main motivation for not to going is to avoid a certain someone,who clearly is not not going to be chipper when she sees me. for this reason i've deciced to become black with dyed green hair once i move to the capital. There are upsides i guess. i think i'll hang out in parliament on off days with a big "toronto loves jack layton" sign or something. the man needs cheering up, after having to listen to harper all day. mr. military commando himself. who the hell elected the maytag repair man as prime minister anyways. fucking hell! theres the french too. they're always good for a laugh and so is claire. omg..!!! i just ran out of good things to say about ottawa!! that was it, three fucking things!! holy shit! i'm so fucked.
